The organizers will begin by noting the disparity between public perception of robots vs. the reality of human-robot interactions we currently have in our laboratories. To accomplish this, the organizers will provide a survey of key examples of human robotic interaction (HRI) drawn from the world of current robotics including military applications, humanoids, entertainment systems, education, medicine and industry. In this presentation, the organizers will explain some of the primary ethical challenges facing each of these domains. They will present different viewpoints representing a spectrum of attitudes towards robots and their introduction into homes, factories and workplaces. Some examples are: robots are merely appliances; robots are capable of emotion and free will; some robots will be used as tools whereas others will become peers. Whether robots have "real feelings" or not, the way we treat them will affect our feelings and the way we treat one another.
